Frequently Asked Questions
We provide answers to common questions about billing and payment options.
Yes, it is safe to pay bills online. Our online payment portals are safe and secure. No one is able to view your personal information other than you.
After your visit, we will send a bill to your primary insurance and, if needed, your secondary insurance. After your insurance company pays us, we will send you a bill for any amount that remains. If your insurance company does not respond within 60 days after we contact them, we may ask you to contact them on our behalf.
You can use our price estimator tool to view estimated costs for more than 300 common procedures. You can also contact us to create a personalized estimate by calling 802-542-3778. Please have your procedure codes ready. A member of our estimates team will assist you.
You may receive three separate types of bills for your care: hospital, physician and anesthesia. Your account number is different for each type of bill.
- Hospital bills include facility use, supplies, lab and radiology services, surgical and medical procedures, and hospital stays.
- Physician bills include physician evaluation, consultation, order management, test interpretation and office procedures.
- Anesthesia bills cover procedures requiring the services of an anesthesiologist, such as surgery.
We understand that you may not be able to pay the amount owed in full. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 802-847-8000 or 800-639-2719 to set up budget payments or discuss other financial assistance options.
Without budget arrangements in place, your account may be referred to a collection agency.
Many doctors across University of Vermont Health send samples to University of Vermont Medical Center Laboratory and Pathology departments for testing and interpretation, or consult with University of Vermont Medical Center physicians on certain cases. In addition, many University of Vermont Medical Center providers travel to other hospitals within our health system to care for patients.
If you are a patient of a UVM Health partner hospital, you may receive the services of a UVM Medical Center physician. You will be billed directly for these services by UVM Medical Center.
In most cases, you do not pay for preventive care. However, you may need to pay for diagnostic care (meaning care provided after a sign or symptom of disease is noticed by your provider). When both preventive and diagnostic care occur during the same visit, the diagnostic services are billed separately and you are responsible for the associated costs (i.e. copayment, deductible and/or coinsurance).
You will need your MyChart login information. You may also pay as a guest, without logging in. Forms of payment accepted are Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. You may also use a health care spending/savings card if it has a Visa or Mastercard logo.
Review your insurance explanation of benefits for the specific date of service you are questioning. If you have recently made a payment, it might not yet be reflected in your current statement due to timing. If you have questions or concerns regarding the balance, please reach out to Customer Service via your MyChart account, phone or email.
Payments made via your MyChart account are credited the same day. Payments made with a customer service representative over the phone are posted the same day. Payments made via our automated pay-by-phone system can take up to 3 business days to post. Payments are posted at the guarantor level to the oldest date of service that is not in collections first, unless otherwise requested.
You may receive bills from other providers of care, such as ambulance service or radiology physicians. Please call that provider directly if you receive a billing statement from them.
If you have enabled paperless billing, log in to your MyChart account to view and print your statements. If you do not have a MyChart account, contact customer service via phone or email.
Log in to your MyChart account by entering your username and password. If you do not have a MyChart account you can “Pay as Guest.”
To pay as a guest, you will need:
- The guarantor ID number located in the top right of your billing statement
- The last name on the bill
- A credit/debit or health care spending account (HSA) card with a Visa or MasterCard logo
- You will receive a confirmation after you make the payment online.
